Year in Books 2025

This year I read 63 murder mysteries, including selections from the following series and a few standalone:

  • The Thursday Murder Club series, Richard Osman (and am reading The Impossible Fortune right now)
  • We Solve Murders, Richard Osman (first in a new series)
  • The Penelope Banks Murder Mysteries, by Collette Clark
  • The Ginger Gold Mysteries and Lady Gold Investigates, by Lee Strauss (second read-through, plus 2 new Velvet Spy prequels)
  • The V.I. Warshawski Mysteries, by Sara Paretsky (second read-through, my favorite author! and Jim has started listening to this series as well, so it’s fun to review with him)
  • Cocaine Blues, Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries, Kerry Greenwood
My Reading Challenge says I read 76 out of my goal of 50 books, so somewhere there are some books that I started reading last year and finished this year. Not sure which ones.
  • Death Comes to Pemberley, by P.D. James
  • Still See You Everywhere, Lisa Gardner (a dark thriller)
  • Charlotte Illes Is Not a Detective, by Katie Siegel (bought on vacation in Minneapolis)
  • Red Team Blues, Cory Doctorow (because it was recommended at Libro.fm)

Another 10 books I read this year that are not murder mysteries:

The cover of The Harder I Fight the More I Love You: A Memoir by Neko Case, featuring a photo of the author as a young girl holding an orange cat, with a cartoon of a black wolf-like creature sneaking up behind her
  • The Harder I Fight the More I Love You: A Memoir, Neko Case (see Fine Arts Building post)
  • This Will Only Hurt a Little, Busy Philipps
  • The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Alexander McCall Smith
  • The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels and The League of Gentlewomen Witches, Dangerous Damsels series, India Holton
  • The Night Bookmobile, Audrey Niffenegger (graphic novel, re-read)
  • The Fated Sky, Lady Astronaut series, Mary Robinette Kowal
The cover of the book Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney, featuring a watercolor sketch of a woman in a long red coat and blue hat
  • Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk, Kathleen Rooney (stumbled on this audiobook on Hoopla through my library, and it was awesome!)
  • Life Hacks for a Little Alien, Alice Franklin
  • The Vanishing Shadow, Judy Bolton mysteries, Margaret Sutton

See My Year in Books for links.

A few books I started and liked but did not finish yet:

  • Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Audio Collection, Arthur Conan Doyle read by Stephen Fry
  • Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology
  • Great Expectations, Charles Dickens
  • Dream Corridor, Volume 2, Harlan Ellison (graphic short stories)
  • Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her, Melanie Rehak
  • Word Puppets, Mary Robinette Kowal
  • The Secret War of Julia Child, Diana R. Chambers
  • I’m Told I Had A Good Time: The Micky Dolenz Archives, Volume One, Micky Dolenz
  • Last Chance Texaco: Chronicles of an American Troubadour, Rickie Lee Jones (recommended by Neko Case)
  • Selected Poems, Langston Hughes

Update 1/4/2026:

While murder is all fine and good (ha) my plan for 2026 is to read more books that are not murder mysteries, including more non-fiction. Because I expect this to show me down a little, my Goodreads challenge goal is 60 books.
