My son is a high school sophomore and just started taking a graphic design class—I’m so excited! Since he’s learning to use Illustrator, I showed him the drawing above, which I made with the pen tool based on a webcam selfie in 2002. He was actually a bit impressed, high praise from a teen to his mom.
I have a folder of portraits of myself, in case I want to swap out my LinkedIn profile photo, I suppose. This is one that I conceived of when I was gathering photos to develop and print in my photography class at Truman College. It was taken by my coworker Bob outside the Wrigley Building in Chicago, where I was working at Stagebill 1997-2002. The fur and leather were both fake but I thought it was a cool, vaguely Russian look.

I have a few images from social media generators that are fun, like my Mad Men portrait.

Like many people’s phones, is full of selfies prompted by “my hair looks decent” or “do I have something between my teeth?” Below is one of those from about 10 years ago which actually is my LinkedIn photo. I had run an errand at the mall and got talked into having my makeup done at Nordstrom. I came away with some very expensive eye cream, which I never used, and this selfie.
